Fr. Peter Joseph Triest

(31 August 1760-24 June 1836)

Peter Joseph Triest who was a priest in the turbulent period after the French Revolution, developed as an innovative driving force for the poor and ill care in Ghent. Faced with immense emergency situations, he constantly sought to provide adequate answers, and this together with the Commission of the almshouses of which he became a member.

For more than 30 years, Peter Joseph Triest will become the supporting force within this committee and thus also open up a new era of presence in society for the Church: that of caring for the poor and sick, in line with the evangelical message. He did not do it alone: he sought men and women who wanted to share his charisma of charity:

it became the four congregations he founded: the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary, the Brothers of Charity, the Brothers of Saint John the Deo and the Sisters of Childhood Jesu.
